BS Cup I.K.O. Matsushima 2016 held with great success

More than 170 fighters can be proud of themselves and their performances at this year’s BS Cup I.K.O. Matsushima, which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark this past weekend. Just by entering and competing in the event is a great victory for the individual karate-ka. By having enough courage to step onto the fighting mat, maybe for the first time, and face an opponent, in front of many spectators, has put his or her own fears aside and exhibited great courage and strong spirit.
The more than 170 fighters represented fighters from Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Belgium from 28 different clubs. The tournament was the biggest event in the seven years BS Karate has hosted BS Cup and the biggest contact karate tournament in Denmark. The massive turn out shows, that BS Karate is meeting a great demand among the practitioners of the popular sport. The reason is, that BS Cup gives the karate practitioner a chance to have a positive experience with his or her first tournament, in that a lot of effort is being put in trying to match all contestants by belt grade, weight, experience, etc.
The weighing in took place Saturday morning of April 5th, at 8:00 am, and all contestants had a long and exciting day ahead of them. BS Cup is targeted at fighters with no or very little tournament experience and the air in the sports arena of BS Karate in Copenhagen was electric from start to finish.
The tournament had three main tracks: One track followed the rules of semi-contact, allowing full contact techniques to the upper body and light contact kicks to the sides of the head. The second track was moderated knock down, following the same rules, but also allowing leg kicks. The third track was the Knock Down class. Underlying these three main tracks, the tournament had 29 sub-categories, where the matching of the fighters mentioned above was done according to age, weight and experience.
The fights started at 10:00 am and fight followed fight, like pearls on a string, towards the conclusion of the tournament at 6:30 pm.
The tournament was judged by some of Kyokushin Karate’s finest national and international judges, including Shihan Klaus Rex (6. Dan), Shihan Erik Bisgaard Sigvaldason (5. Dan), Shihan Paul Jensen (5. Dan), Sensei Helle Bisgaard Sigvaldason (3. Dan), Sensei Kim Hansen (3. Dan), Senpai Karsten Korre (2. Dan) and many more.
The founder of BS Karate, Shihan Erik Bisgaard Sigvaldason, says: ”On behalf of myself and BS Karate, I would like to extent my sincere gratitude towards all contestants for participating in BS Cup 2016. It is truly great to see that we can come together, so many people, around our common interest. It is my hope that all fighters had a good experience: Many people have worked very hard to make it so and I want to thank them specifically. I hope to see you all again next year in the beginning of April to BS Cup I.K.O. Matsushima 2017”.
